Joash, the king who wanted to please others

Tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine

There is much to learn from Joash’s character; but one particular thing emerges from his reign: it is his radical change of attitude after the death of Jehoiada. There is a lot to think about in this. A very interesting question is to try to understand how he came to listen to the princes of Judah who seemed inclined towards evil.

One thing is certain, Joash, though educated for years by Jehoiada, seems to have never grown in strength spiritually. It reminds us that the Lord gave gifts to his assembly precisely so that “we all arrive at the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, at the full-grown man, at the measure of the stature of the fulness of the Christ; in order that we may be no longer babes, tossed and carried about by every wind of that teaching which is in the sleight of men” (Ephesians 4:13 -14).

Unfortunately Joash was well misled by these princes of Judah, and the consequences were disastrous for him. May the Lord give us to grow in Him, as full-grown man, not to be deceived by men, tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine, but attached to the Lord Jesus!

This video about Joash presents three practical lessons for us. May the Lord encourage us all to follow Him faithfully.

Ahaziah, the king who was badly advised

The video is in French, with English subtitles available.

The consequences of bad choices

Ahaziah was born into a family whose father did not follow his father’s ways. Jehoram has departed from God in a terrible way. When Jehoram died, Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, was his counselor, as well as his in-laws, the house of Ahab. Ahaziah, however, knew his grandfather; He was 14 when Jehosaphat died. But the environment in which he grew up was spiritually wicked. There was no one, it seems, to advise him to good.

We can really see the grace of God intervening, even in His judgments, to cleanse the house of David from all that evil that was introduced. God was going to fulfill his purpose. But on the spot, we could have believed the opposite, while Athaliah reigns over the kingdom of Judah. Judah under the reign of Ahab’s house! These are all consequences of Josaphat’s choices. This choice to ally by marriage with the house of Ahab had terrible consequences for his son and his grandchildren son his sons and grandsons.

This new video presents us with three lessons to learn about Ahaziah. May we learn from what brought about the necessity of such a judgment on the part of God.
